SLEIGHT OF MIND: MAGIC REALISM IN CONTEMPORARY ART
October 21 to November 27, 2005
Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts at Flushing Town Hall 137-35 Northern Blvd. Flushing, NY 11354

Seemingly a contradiction in terms, Magic Realism is a term used in the arts (literary, visual, film and theatre) to describe the merging of the everyday use of the figurative with an often mysterious, altered view of reality. “In magical realism the writer confronts reality and tries to untangle it, to discover what is mysterious in things, in life, in human acts. The principal thing is not the creation of imaginary beings or worlds but the discovery of the mysterious relationship between man and his circumstances. The magical realist does not try to copy the surrounding reality (as the realists did) or to wound it (as the surrealists did) but to seize the mystery that breathes behind things.” (Magical Realism. Ed. L. P. Zamora and W. B. Faris. Durham: Duke UP, 1995. p. 121-123).
